How to remove yourself from Checkr

Site

Difficulty
Medium — there is no opt-out to file: a consumer's rights are a copy of the file and a dispute, both routed through a login-gated portal; dispute instructions live in a JavaScript help center that could not be read, and the dispute form is on a third-party host that disallows crawlers

What they publish

Nothing public — employment background reports ordered by a customer. The California policy lists "Name Date of birth Online identifiers Phone number Email address Postal address ... Social security number Passport number Drivers license or permit numbers" collected from "Customers Credit reporting agencies Data furnishers and other vendors Governmental entities". The privacy policy states that for FCRA-governed data "the CCPA and similar state privacy laws generally do not apply" and that a request "to delete personal information from your background check—such as criminal history or motor vehicle records—the CCPA would not require us to do so"

Owner / network: Checkr, Inc., 1 Montgomery St, San Francisco, CA 94104; the privacy policy also covers "Zethos, Inc. d/b/a Truework"

Removing yourself, step by step

0 of 5 done
  1. Understand what is possible: Checkr is an FCRA consumer reporting agency, so you cannot opt out of or delete a background report. Your rights are to "access certain information in your file" and to "request Checkr to investigate information in your background check that you believe is inaccurate or incomplete" (Terms §8, citing 15 U.S.C. §§ 1681g and 1681i)
  2. Get a free copy: log in at https://candidate.checkr.com/ — "Within the candidate portal, you can find the status of your background check, get additional information, or request your own copy"; once complete "you can download a copy by logging into the Candidate Portal"
  3. Dispute an inaccurate or incomplete item from the portal (the product page says "forms, disclosures, authorizations, and disputes all work natively on mobile"); attach supporting documents. If you cannot log in, open a ticket at https://help.checkr.com/s/contactsupport
  4. FCRA §611 (15 U.S.C. §1681i) gives the CRA 30 days to reinvestigate and tell you the result (statute; Checkr publishes no dispute timeline)
  5. For CCPA/state-privacy requests about non-FCRA data, email hello@checkr.com; appeals of a refusal also go to hello@checkr.com (Privacy Policy §6.5). Postal: Checkr, Inc., Attn: Privacy Questions, 1 Montgomery St, San Francisco, CA 94104

How they confirm it

Candidate Portal login "with the information you submitted for your background check" (name/email/DOB/SSN fragments as entered at the time, exact fields unconfirmed ); the portal page loads a reCAPTCHA site key; privacy-rights requests by email to hello@checkr.com must state "whether you are directing your request toward Checkr, Inc. or Truework and your state of residence"

If they ignore you

CFPB complaint (consumerfinance.gov/complaint) and FCRA §611 reinvestigation rights, with a private right of action under §§616–617 for wilful or negligent non-compliance; California Attorney General (company is in San Francisco); the company is not in the CPPA data-broker registry (CSV fetched 2026-10-10)

Data brokers re-list. Check again in about 60 days.

Re-listing risk for this site: High — a CRA assembles a fresh report each time an employer orders one from court, DMV and furnisher sources; correcting an item does not stop future reports, and "records sealed after the date of the report may still be shown"
