How to remove yourself from ChexSystems

Site
chexsystems.com
Category
risk
Difficulty
Medium — three separate rights (freeze, prescreen opt-out, dispute), and the self-service site blocks non-browser clients, so nothing could be confirmed except through the regulator's listing
Time to processnot published ; the CFPB entry states the FCRA rule that "For companies required to provide the information in your report for free annually upon request, they must do so within fifteen days of receiving your request." Dispute reinvestigation is 30 days under FCRA §611, cited as statutory, not as a ChexSystems figure

What they publish

Per the CFPB entry, "Provides account verification services primarily for financial institutions. Collects and reports data on checking account applications, openings, and closures, including reasons for account closure. Provides deposit account information to lenders evaluating whether to offer credit to consumers with damaged, little or no credit history." Buyers are banks and credit unions screening new deposit accounts. This is a consumer report: there is no opt-out from the file itself. The rights are a free annual disclosure, a security freeze, disputing inaccurate items, and a prescreen opt-out

Owner / network: "Chex Systems is owned by the eFunds subsidiary of Fidelity National Information Services, Inc. (FNIS)" (CFPB company entry, page last modified Jan. 30, 2025). The company's own site returned 403 to every request today, so ownership is quoted from the regulator's list, not from chexsystems.com

Removing yourself, step by step

0 of 4 done
  1. Request the free annual disclosure by phone at 800-428-9623 or by mail to Chex Systems, Inc., Attn: Consumer Relations, P.O. Box 583399, Minneapolis, MN 55458 (both from the CFPB entry); the online request page at https://www.chexsystems.com/request-reports/consumer-disclosure was 403 today .
  2. Place a security freeze — the CFPB entry confirms "This company will freeze your consumer report if you request it"; the freeze page https://www.chexsystems.com/security-freeze was 403 today . Keep the freeze confirmation/PIN.
  3. Opt out of prescreened offers at https://www.chexsystems.com/optout ; the permanent election reportedly needs a signed mailed form .
  4. Dispute any inaccurate item in writing; under the FCRA the company "must conduct – free of charge – a reasonable investigation of your dispute" (CFPB entry). Removal of accurate items is not available.

How they confirm it

not fetchable today — the company's pages are 403. The prior guide recorded "full name, current address, DOB, SSN" and a signed "Permanent Opt Out Election" form for the permanent prescreen opt-out

If they ignore you

CFPB complaint (consumerfinance.gov/complaint); state AG; FCRA §611 dispute rights; private right of action under FCRA §§616–617

Data brokers re-list. Check again in about 60 days.

Re-listing risk for this site: High — a CRA keeps receiving data from furnishing banks; a freeze restricts who can see the file, it does not stop furnishers reporting into it, and the 5-year prescreen opt-out expires
